OLD CINEMA FINALLY BEING REDEVELOPED

At last the old Double Bay Cinema is being redeveloped !!

No-one will be sad to see this eyesore go. It was smelly, rat infested and looked awful. A disgrace to its owners and a blot on the Double Bay landscape.

Perhaps we should have a party. More info to follow.

TEACH YOUR DOG SOME CLASS - A well trained dog's a Happy Dog

Funny thing, a well trained dog gets more freedom than one that is left to its own devices.

That's because poorly behaved dogs are a pain to everyone so don't get to go to many places, and even when they do, find themselves on a short leash.

Vet HQ loves dogs and wants them to be as happy as they can possibly be so every Sunday at 10.00 am they hold dog training at their premises in Double Bay. Come along to:-

For those who recognise the name Bruno Dutot, but can quite remember why, he is the artist who paints the picture of "Rochelle" seen at the junction of New South Head Road and Darling Point Road at Edgecliff.

Here is what Wikipedia has to say about him:-

Bruno Dutot (born 19 October 1962) is a French-born Australian painter, known especially for his public mural of 'Oucha' a woman with cat in Edgecliff, Sydney.

Born in Normandy, the youngest child of 8 siblings, Dutot trained at the fine arts school "École des Beaux-Arts" in Caen for 2 years.[1]

Dutot emigrated to Australia in 1987[2] and promptly began infusing Sydney with French style by painting walls in various locations.

His artistic style has evolved from the red dress he used to draw in Paris to 'Rochelle', the elegant stylised woman facing away from the viewer, with elongated, free-flowing arms, accompanied by a cat.

Rochelle is most famously displayed on the wall at the intersection of New South Head Rd and Darling Point Rd, Edgecliff. This iconic painting, best seen travelling East on New South Head Rd, dates back to the mid-1980s and has developed into a community project.

In the mid-1990s, Dutot left Sydney for five years during which, unbeknown to him, other artists maintained the spirit of the artwork. Since his return, Bruno has regularly updated the wall with new themes and messages.[2]

Dutot's public painting now holds cultural significance to many Sydneysiders. In an interview with Music Australia singer/songwriter Wendy Matthews summed it up: "Every time I come to the city I drive past her, see if she's changed. Sometimes she'll have a cat or be standing in snow. Though you never see her face, she's come to symbolise Sydney for me."[3]

Paintings of Rochelle can now be found in art galleries around Sydney, usually with a variation of the title ‘Oucha’.

"APPY HOUR" NUMBER 3 A GREAT SUCCESS

Discover Double Bay's 3rd get together proved to be a great success with over 60 people in attendance and a great cast of speakers.

MC Luke Redmond did a great job of keeping things moving and presentations were made by Brian O'Dowd (Urban development to brighten the face of Double Bay), David Baumgarten (Free business development & management advice), Tanya Lee (The Corrilee Foundation and the work they do for small charities) and Jennifer Kennedy (on her vision for Double Bay as The Centre for Outstanding Weddings)

Visitors attending came from as far afield as Newcastle, but most a little closer including Maroubra, Five Dock, Randwick and Bondi Junction. This is great, and in line with the objectives of Discover Double Bay which are to:-
  • Build Bridges between people and organisations (of all sorts and from everywhere)
  • Help people bring their ideas to life
  • Help charities raise awareness of their activities and the causes they support.

Following soon will be images of the event and a list of all people who attended (if they put their cards in the hat)

The next event will be on Tuesday 13th May from 5.30-8.00pm at the 18 Footers Club Double Bay. Claire Coppins owner of TIGHTTIGERS is scheduled to speak on why she chose Double Bay as the venue for her flagship store.

To book google "Appy Hour Double Bay" and use the eventbrite.com link to book a place. Entrance is free to members and just $15 per session for non-members and includes light snacks and facilities to help attendees keep in touch with the people they meet.

A BIG THANK YOU TO WOOLLAHRA COUNCIL & NICOLA MANNING

Regular users of Jamberoo Lane have been delighted with the site of green grass where there was previously old tree stumps and a tangle of dead ivy and detritus.

So a big thank you to all concerned and especially Nicola Manning, whose brain child the upgrade was.

Discover Double Bay loves to see ideas come to light and heartily welcomes new ideas at our monthly meetings at the 18 Footers Club on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

If, like Nicola, you have an idea you'd like to get off the ground, come along to our next meeting from 5.30 - 8.00 pm on Tuesday 8th April.

We aim to get the formal stuff out of the way between 6.00 and 6.30 so early leavers can get away. After that people just stay on, get a bite to eat and chat.

To attend Google "Appy Hour Double Bay" and use www.eventbrite.com.au to book a place. Meetings are free to members and first timers.

Or call 0408 998 058 for more info.
